The Grid Before the Letter
Before Adrian Frutiger drew a single letter of Univers, he designed the system that would hold the whole family together. The numbering grid came first — then the type was made to fit it. It was a new way of thinking about how a typeface family works.

In the mid-1950s, a young Swiss typographer working in Paris sat down to design not a typeface but a coordinate system. Adrian Frutiger was twenty-six years old, employed by the Deberny & Peignot foundry, and had been given an unusual commission: to design a large type family from scratch. Before he drew a single letter, he drew a grid. Everything about Univers follows from that decision.
The problem Frutiger was solving was not, at first glance, obviously a problem. Type families had existed for decades — Futura, released by Paul Renner in 1927, had a range of weights; so did Gill Sans, released by Eric Gill from 1928. But these families had grown by accretion. A designer drew a regular weight; if it sold, a bold was commissioned; then a light, then a condensed. The weights were not conceived as a system. They were named with words — Light, Regular, Medium, Bold, Extra Bold, Condensed, Extended — that described each variant individually but gave no map of how they related. A typographer setting a page had to hold in their head which bold was which, whether a given condensed had an oblique, whether two weights from the same family were visually compatible or merely nominally related.
Frutiger thought about this differently. He wanted to design a complete family at once — not one weight and then additions, but the whole thing as a planned structure — and he wanted the structure to be legible in the name of every variant.
The two-digit system
The solution was a two-digit numbering code. The tens digit describes weight, on a scale from 3 (light) to 8 (ultra bold), with 5 as the regular. The units digit describes width and posture: odd numbers are upright, even numbers are oblique; lower numbers are wider, higher numbers are narrower. The centre of the system is 55 — Univers 55, the regular upright weight, the neutral, the starting point from which everything else is a measured departure.
From this grid, Frutiger could name a variant before it existed and know exactly where it sat relative to every other variant. Univers 75 is bold condensed. Univers 47 is light condensed oblique. Univers 67 is bold condensed oblique. The number is not a marketing label; it is a coordinate. When you read it, you know the weight, the width, and the angle. Two variants with numbers that differ by one unit are close neighbours in the family; two variants with numbers far apart are distant relatives.
The family as released in 1957 comprised twenty-one variants — an unusually large number for a single launch, and one that required Deberny & Peignot to commit substantial production resources before the typeface had proven itself commercially. In metal type this meant cutting twenty-one sets of matrices; the foundry also released Univers simultaneously in the phototypesetting format of the Lumitype machine, making it one of the first typefaces explicitly designed for both technologies at once. The optical adjustments required between metal and photo were significant — at small sizes in metal, strokes must be slightly adjusted to compensate for ink spread; phototype has different characteristics — and Frutiger managed both.
Drawing the letters
The visual character of Univers is restrained in a way that requires a word of explanation. It is a sans-serif in the humanist-geometric tradition — clean strokes, minimal optical tricks, no ornament — and its neutrality is intentional. Frutiger was not trying to make a typeface with a personality; he was trying to make one that would be usable across a very wide range of applications without asserting itself. The letterforms are slightly warmer than Helvetica's — the terminals of the C and G, for instance, are cut at a horizontal rather than a perfect diagonal, giving them a slightly more open feeling — but the overall register is cool and systematic.
This restraint was the point. A family of twenty-one variants would be used together, mixed, set against itself in complex typographic hierarchies. For that to work without visual chaos, the individual variants had to be quiet. The system's expressiveness comes not from any single letter but from the range of the grid — the distance between the lightest and the heaviest, the widest and the narrowest, all held together by consistent construction.
After Univers
The airport commission that produced the typeface now called Frutiger came about because Charles de Gaulle Airport (then under construction at Roissy, north of Paris) needed a signage system legible from a distance, at speed, and in bad light. The typeface Frutiger designed for it was more humanist than Univers — with open counters and slightly varying stroke widths — and it worked so well that, after a campaign by typographers who had seen it in use, Deberny & Peignot released it commercially in 1976 under his name.
If you remember the shape of a spoon which you use every day, it is ugly. If the spoon is beautiful, it is the wrong spoon for eating. The best typeface is the one you don't notice.
His third major typeface, Avenir (French for "future"), came in 1988 — thirty years after Univers. He described it as his most personal work and, by some accounts, his most perfect. It is a geometric sans-serif — closer in spirit to Futura than to Univers — but corrected for the optical illusions that strict geometry produces: the "circles" in letters like O and C are not true circles but slightly widened ovals; the stems are not perfectly uniform in weight. It is geometry adjusted for the eye.
What Frutiger left behind is not just a set of typefaces but a way of thinking about type as a system. The numbering logic of Univers is now embedded in the terminology of type design software — weights and widths are described on numerical axes, and the concept of a "variable font" (a single file containing an entire adjustable range) is in some ways a technical realisation of what Frutiger was trying to do by hand, on paper, in a Paris foundry in the mid-1950s. He was working out a structure that the tools of his time could only partially implement. It took the industry another sixty years to catch up.
