Tim Berners-Lee

The computer scientist who invented the World Wide Web in 1989 — and who has since dedicated himself to defending it from the forces of centralisation and surveillance he did not anticipate.
In 1989, working at the European particle physics laboratory CERN in Geneva, Tim Berners-Lee wrote a proposal for a system of linked documents distributed across the internet. By 1991 the first website was live. What he built — the World Wide Web — became the dominant information medium of the twentieth century's final decade and the foundational infrastructure of the twenty-first. He gave it away without a patent, and has spent the decades since trying to keep it open.
Formation and the CERN years
Berners-Lee was born in London in 1955, the son of two mathematicians who had worked on the Ferranti Mark 1, one of the first commercially available computers. He read Physics at The Queen's College, Oxford, graduating in 1976, before working in software engineering in Dorset. In 1980 he took a consultancy position at CERN in Geneva, where he wrote a personal information management program called Enquire to track the lab's sprawling networks of people and projects. Enquire was never published, but it contained the conceptual seed of what followed: nodes linked by typed relationships.
After a period back in England, he returned to CERN in 1984. The lab presented a specific problem: thousands of researchers passed through on short contracts, and institutional knowledge walked out with them. Berners-Lee's response, circulated in March 1989, was a proposal titled "Information Management: A Proposal" — described by his supervisor Mike Sendall as "vague but exciting."
The invention of the Web
Between 1989 and 1991 Berners-Lee developed the three technologies that define the Web:

On a NeXT workstation, he built both the first web server and the first web browser, named WorldWideWeb. The first website — info.cern.ch — went live in August 1991. Crucially, Berners-Lee and CERN released the underlying software into the public domain in 1993 with no royalties attached. That decision — to not patent the Web — made possible its explosive adoption. By the mid-1990s, commercial browsers and servers had proliferated and the medium was transforming commerce, media, and communication.1
Stewardship and advocacy
In 1994 Berners-Lee founded the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) at MIT to develop open standards for the Web, ensuring no single company could control its evolution. He has held positions at MIT and, later, the University of Oxford.
His later years have been marked by increasing concern about the Web's direction. In successive open letters — including those marking the Web's 29th and 30th anniversaries — he identified three major threats: deliberate, malicious content; a winner-takes-all advertising economy that incentivises disinformation; and pervasive surveillance by states and corporations. In 2018 he launched the Contract for the Web, a set of principles for governments, companies, and individuals. He has also promoted the Solid project, a technical specification for decentralised data storage that would allow individuals to control their own data independently of platforms.
Legacy
Berners-Lee received a knighthood in 2004 and has accumulated a large number of further honours, including the Turing Award (2016), computing's highest distinction. His original proposal and the NeXT machine on which he built the first server are held at CERN. At the 2012 London Olympic Games opening ceremony, he appeared in person, tweeting "This is for everyone" — a phrase that captured the founding principle he has consistently defended.
