Shigeru Ban

The Japanese architect who turned emergency shelter into a design discipline, using cardboard tubes and recycled materials to house disaster victims with speed, dignity, and structural ingenuity.
Shigeru Ban is the architect who proved that temporary and inexpensive do not mean impermanent in quality or dignity. His use of recycled cardboard tubes — cheap, lightweight, structurally capable, and biodegradable — as a primary structural material for disaster-relief housing gave architecture a material vocabulary adequate to humanitarian crises. He won the Pritzker Prize in 2014; the Pritzker jury cited both the quality of his permanent buildings and the ethical seriousness of the relief work.
Formation and early practice
Ban was born in Tokyo in 1957 and studied architecture at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) before completing his degree at Cooper Union in New York, where he was taught by John Hejduk. He worked in the office of Arata Isozaki before establishing his own practice in Tokyo in 1985.
His early work explored unconventional materials — paper, fabric, bamboo — and temporary construction, leading him toward a practice defined by material innovation rather than formal expression.
Paper architecture
Ban's experiments with cardboard tubes — paper-core cylinders used as industrial packaging material — began in the mid-1980s as he worked through the structural and architectural possibilities of an inexpensive, widely available, and recyclable material. The tubes proved capable of spanning significant distances and, appropriately detailed, of resisting the loads required of a structural wall or roof system.
The first full demonstration of their humanitarian potential came after the 1994 Rwanda genocide, when Ban designed emergency shelters using cardboard tubes and beer-case bases filled with sandbags for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. After the 1995 Kobe earthquake in Japan he developed a prototype Paper Log House for displaced residents, and has since deployed comparable structures in response to earthquakes and other disasters in Turkey, India, Sri Lanka, China, Haiti, New Zealand, and elsewhere.
He founded the Voluntary Architects' Network (VAN) to coordinate the design and construction of relief structures, working with student volunteers and local communities.
Good architecture should not depend on budget. Material intelligence is how you make that true.
Permanent work
Alongside the relief projects Ban has maintained a practice of permanent buildings characterised by structural ingenuity and spatial generosity. The Pompidou-Metz (2010), designed with Jean de Gastines, used a woven timber gridshell roof derived from the weave pattern of a Chinese hat. The Tamedia Building in Zurich (2013) used a timber structural system assembled without metal connectors. The Mount Fuji World Heritage Centre in Shizuoka (2017) inverted its conical form so that an upside-down wooden lattice cone is reflected in a pool at its base.
He received the Pritzker Prize in 2014.
